Kohl's is a department store chain that was started by Maxwell Kohl in 1946. While today's Kohl's stores sell clothing and accessories, the original stores were supermarkets called Kohl's Food Stores. In 1962 the first Kohl's Department store was opened in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Originally, Kohl's department stores were at the middle of the road as far as pricing and sold a range of products, from candy to sporting goods to engine oil. Today, Kohl's offers traditional department store fare in its more than 1100 stores located in every state except Hawaii. Most stores are freestanding, although locations in enclosed shopping malls do exist.
