Thomas J. Folliard CEO; CarMax is the United States' largest used-car retailer and a Fortune 500 company. The first CarMax location opened in September 1993. As of May 2015, the company had 147 locations. Prior to the first store being built, DeVito/Verdi was hired as the advertising agency and creative resource. The company executed the campaign and additional TV advertisements over the course of a number of years in support of the launch and the initial wave of stores.

The interview procedure at CarMax is similar to competitors. There is a common skills assessment which covers subjects including but not limited to reading, writing, speaking, and basic math. Applicants must bring their resume with them to the interview. Some applicants go through a email screening before progressing to an in person interview. Former employees have reported that it is important to show that you are capable of handling stressful situations, working in a fast paced environment, have a flexible schedule, and communicating with colleagues. Once through the application process, all new hires are required to go through a basic training.
